InsideClimate News (ICN) is looking for an innovative strategic outreach pro who loves to be hands-on in every aspect of the work. You'll implement creative new strategies to take our growing Pulitzer Prize-winning news team and its work to new audiences and communities.

The Director of Strategic Communications will develop, implement and oversee our efforts to reach new audiences by:

  • Participating in strategic planning with senior staff ahead of publication, and collaborating with colleagues across the organization.
  • Identifying and developing creative and cost-effective ways to reach desired audiences, including building a robust social media presence.
  • Placing stories with appropriate media partners.
  • Placing reporters on broadcast media when they break news, or important news breaks.
  • Analyzing and monitoring news and social media mentions and performance, setting targets and recommending ways to improve.
  • Hiring junior staff over time to grow this new organizational capacity.

In short, the Director of Outreach will get ICN's work in front of the people and in the places where our journalism will resonate—but where it's not yet reaching.

The primary deliverables are measurable reach and impact, and growing the subscriber base of our free newsletters. Over time we expect the director to identify and hire additional staff to fully develop this new organizational capacity.

This is a job for a creative self-starter with experience in public relations, communications and/or digital marketing who has proven success in strategic communications plans for reaching key audiences. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about ICN's journalism and the issues we cover and is driven to reach a wider and more engaged audience.

This is a chance to be part of a team that has become a leader in deep reporting on climate change accountability and energy issues. It is an exciting opportunity to work on one of most consequential issues of our time.

We prize accuracy, creativity, clarity, flexibility, adherence to deadlines, good news judgment and a strong work ethic. An ability to excel in the culture of an entrepreneurial and collaborative news organization is a must.

  • Strong writing and communications skills are primary
  • At least 4-6 years of experience in a public relations/communications/digital marketing/community outreach position, with solid experience developing and executing brand-building and media relations campaigns.
  • Prior experience managing social media platforms and crafting engaging, professional social media posts is a must.
  • Deep familiarity with Google analytics and an ease with data analysis.
  • Strong understanding of current industry best practices.
  • A passion for developing and experimenting with new ideas.
  • Superlative people skills and collaborative nature.
  • Knowledge of environmental science, energy and climate change is a plus.

About ICN

Founded in 2007, InsideClimate News is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan news organization that covers clean energy, carbon energy, nuclear energy and environmental science—plus the territory in between where law, policy and public opinion are shaped. Already one of the largest environmental newsrooms in the country, ICN is committed to establishing a permanent national reporting network, to training the next generation of journalists, and to strengthening the practice of environmental journalism.

Our operation is largely virtual: We have a hub in New York, one in D.C. and another in Boston, and staff from California to Maine. Our newsroom has always been driven by self-starters. We are staffed by professional journalists, many of whom bring decades of experience from leading media organizations, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, ProPublica, Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg News and Frontline. Others come from top programs for science writing and investigative journalism, among other backgrounds. Good ideas propel the operation, wherever they originate.

We have a supportive culture of collaboration and high standards of professionalism. At our core, we are motivated by accountability journalism and storytelling that has the impact to improve the public interest.

We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. For more, please see:
