Position Overview

The Editor of the Sound Consumer is responsible for producing the Sound Consumer, which has been an influential force in the sustainable and healthy food revolution for more than two decades. They are an experienced professional who produces the monthly 8-page publication (circ. 59,000) that is dedicated to educating members and the public about how foods are produced and the impacts on human and environmental health. 

Main Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for generating original editorial content, commissioning writers, editing copy, and managing timely production of the paper across departments
  • Collaborates with staff to develop newsworthy stories about consumer issues and industry practices
  • Develops stories about co-op news and co-op community events
  • Maintains working relationships with experts to hire as commissioned writers, or to consult with for story development
  • Works with Director of Product Sustainability to formulate replies to Letters to the Editor
  • Writes Sound Consumer headline and summary copy for our website and social media

Accountability

  • Reports to: Director of Product Sustainability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Minimum 5 years major news market experience as a food or environmental writer or reporter
  • Knowledge about complex issues involving the environment and today’s evolving food and body care industries, including organic and regenerative food practices, required
  • Experience and comfort with constant deadlines
  • Excellent customer service skills and a desire to work collaboratively as part of a large team
  • Passion for food and PCC’s values
  • Knowledge of USDA organic standards, sustainable seafood, fair labor, and genetic engineering preferred
