The Santa Fe New Mexican is looking for a K-14 education reporter who also can handle general assignment work as needed.

On a daily basis, you’ll cover one of the state’s largest school districts, a robust charter and private-school system and the city’s community college. Yes, you’ll staff school board meetings, but we’re looking for someone who can tell education stories from the classroom, plus key trends that affect kids, teachers, parents and schools in the community.

The New Mexican is one of the Southwest’s best newspapers, and we look for incisive reporting and engaging writing – every day, not just when we’re doing projects. We emphasize local news on A1 and have a robust local section. The education beat, and its effect upon Northern New Mexico, is a key contributor to our news report.

You’ll be busy, productive and surrounded by colleagues who care about good journalism above all.

Job requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience in news at a daily newspaper.
  • Strong writing skills with an eye on deadline and the willingness to tell stories in non-traditional ways.
  • The ability to find sources and connect with the community.

We’re looking for someone who can start in early January. Salary is negotiable. Send your cover letter, resume and clips to: Phill Casaus, Editor, Santa Fe New Mexican, No calls, please.

The New Mexican offers a comprehensive and competitive compensation package and is an equal opportunity employer.
