Job Description

Summary

Solicits, edits, and manages outside author contributions and other editorial content for publication. Solicits article submissions and new columns.  Attends various events to meet with authors and potential authors. Works with commentary staff to accept and reject article submissions and tracks the work flow of all commentary. Manages special projects, particularly important anniversary articles and features. Works to acknowledge and thank outside contributors on an annual basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Solicits outside material, including new regular columnists, on a regular basis.
  2. Works with Editors in Chief to ensure regular evaluation and coverage of timely tax topics, and to send new topic and material request to outside authors as needed.
  3. Works with Executive Editor to evaluate current and potential authors, and to ensure efficient allocation of outside author budget.
  4. Works with Editors in Chief to produce, edit, and coordinate special projects and magazine features, including anniversary, year-in-review, special supplements, and other longer-term pieces.
  5. Oversees outside author payments.
  6. Keeps abreast of current events through pertinent literature, media, and contacts with government officials, tax professionals, industry groups, and others.
  7. Enters information in the content management system.
  8. May participate in planning company-sponsored conferences, roundtable discussions, etc. 
  9. Responds to internal and external queries related to content.
  10. Edits for substance, style, and accurateness, conducts research as needed, and ensures proper citation style, according to established policies and procedures.
  11. Adheres to established publication deadlines, and company style guide.
  12. Manages and oversees databases related to outside authors.
  13. Manages commentary department’s editorial and administrative tasks; delegates as needed.
  14. Coordinates process for author feedback and acknowledgement, and addresses minor problems that may arise in the publication process.

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills
  2. Demonstrated strong knowledge of writing and editing concepts and principles
  3. Must be able to evaluate content for grammar, clarity, and coherence
  4. Ability to work under deadline pressure in a team environment
  5. Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Windows and MS Word
  6. Highly motivated and well-organized

Requirements

  1. BA in related field, or equivalent in experience required
  2. 5+ years of professional experience required
  3. Experience in marketing or communications a plus
  4. Previous experience in tax publishing, online publishing or at a trade publication a plus
  5. Experience with data analytics (editorial analytics specifically) and database management
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of standard style manuals
