Carlton Fields is seeking a Senior Writer and Content Manager.  This position is open to candidates in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Miami and Tampa.

Position Summary

The Senior Writer and Content Manager is responsible for developing and delivering a variety of publications and communications in support of the Firm’s brand positioning, business development and recruitment objectives.  Guided by the Firm’s brand messaging and tone of voice guidelines, he or she works with key stakeholders to develop communications that showcase the Firm’s and its lawyers’ expertise and plays a lead role in shaping editorial strategy and processes.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Project manage the development and delivery of a variety of publications and print/online content. This may include (but is not limited to):
    • Defining requirements;
    • Developing and approving production schedules;
    • Planning and commissioning content;
    • Writing, copy-editing and proofing text;
    • Approving changes with authors; overseeing and copy-editing proofs;
    • Liaising with Web and Graphic Design team and external agencies as necessary; and
    • Signing off jobs for print.
  • Work with the Senior Communications Manager and other Managers to develop content ideas and campaigns.
  • Write, review, and/or edit all internal and external marketing materials ensuring consistent tone, style, and readability, including but not limited to firm wide promotional material, web content, practice descriptions, attorney bios, brochures, boilerplate text, directory entries. Ensure all editorial content complies with the Firm’s brand messaging, tone of voice and editorial guidelines.
  • Draft articles, profiles, and other thought leadership materials, working with attorneys and business development teams.
  • Re-write/re-purpose content from a variety of sources to ensure it can be used in multiple channels for maximum impact.
  • Research, draft, and manage strategic award submissions process.
  • Provide day-to-day editorial support to attorneys and internal teams by advising on structure, reviewing and copy-editing text and ensuring technical material is accessible to a non-expert legal audience.
  • Oversee general output and ensure it complies with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that editorial content supports business and marketing objectives wherever possible.

Editorial strategy and process

  • Develop editorial policies and procedures to define the Firm’s editorial quality standards and ensure they are met.
  • Develop systems to ensure that key publications are reviewed regularly and updated as necessary.
  • Develop publications policies and best practice guidelines.


  • Develop regular trainings and workshops for attorneys for attorney bios and credentialing.
  • Develop regular program of writing and grammar training for key functions, e.g. marketing, knowledge management, HR, etc.

Quantifying and Reporting Results

  • Contribute to the design of systems and processes to define and monitor success; share results with internal teams to evolve client-focused content and create better copy.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of tools and initiatives to communicate successes and demonstrate value of the Firm’s marketing communications program.


  • J.D. preferred. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, public relations, or other marketing or communications-related field. Prior work experience as a journalist preferred in an editorial role, including a mix of project-managing, copy writing and copy-editing promotional and technical publications and materials.
  • 7-10 years of legal marketing writing experience. Law firm background strongly preferred. Strong understanding of law firms and lawyers.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced client service environment under tight deadlines with multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a collaborative, team environment. Excellent communications skills (written and verbal) with confidence and ability to deal with partners, senior lawyers and staff at all levels.
