The Colorado Sun seeks education writer

The Colorado Sun is seeking an experienced reporter to cover education issues across Colorado, with a particular emphasis on rural districts where stories now often go untold.

The successful candidate will understand that stories are not about process; they’re about people. This reporter should know how to dig into documents, public records and spreadsheets with the skill of an investigative reporter, but know how to use those findings in innovative ways to tell stories that impact real people. The reporter will become knowledgeable about a variety of state education issues and systems, including funding, testing, charter schools, school security and mental health. He or she must understand that their stories are for the people of Colorado, not education officials.

Rise to the top of the stack with proven ability to balance long-range projects and features with lively, quick-hit stories. We will be looking for a self-starter with the ability to work independently, but who also brings a collaborative spirit to our growing team. The ideal candidate should be productive, bring urgency to their work and be prepared to travel as needed to tell excellent education stories. The education reporter should be a strong performer on social media, understand the power and importance of working in a digital environment and be prepared to work flexible hours to cover the news when and where it happens.

Colorado is a state filled with many points of view, and potential candidates must be able to produce non-partisan, fair and accurate journalism that reflects these varied views.

The job, grant-funded for a minimum of two years, is based in metro Denver, but travel throughout the state is required.

The Colorado Sun is a new online news organization created and owned by some of the state’s most experienced journalists. It produces excellent local journalism that highlights the people, places and issues that make Colorado a great place to live, work and play.

The Colorado Sun is an equal opportunity employer and encourages workplace diversity. The Sun will consider all qualified candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity, family responsibilities, disability, education, political affiliation or veteran status.
