GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Detroit Catholic, a new digital news website, is seeking a versatile freelance journalist interested in covering Catholic news and events within the six-county Archdiocese of Detroit. Candidates should be self-starters with digital journalism or community newspaper experience with a passion for finding and telling creative, inspiring and informative stories that involve faith, human interest and news from Catholic events and liturgies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pitch, develop, interview and write compelling news-style and feature stories involving Catholic events, institutions and individuals from 220 parishes, 90 schools and various ministries within southeast Michigan
  • Travel for interviews, events and assignments within the six-county Archdiocese of Detroit (with most stories based in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties)
  • Work with editors to procure or arrange photos, videos and audio to accompany stories
  • When no photographer is available, have the ability to take news-quality photographs to accompany stories using your own equipment (DSLR camera required)
  • Conduct research, consult experts for background, develop a network of sources and contacts, and conduct interviews as appropriate
  • Produce articles in a timely manner following events and have the ability to adhere to tight deadlines
  • Have a working knowledge of and respect for the Catholic Church, its teachings, precepts and structure, and the ability to communicate that knowledge to a broad general audience in an engaging and informative way
  • Knowledge of and ability to use social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for reporting is appreciated
  • Have an exceptional “journalistic sense” and understand what topics will be of interest to the diverse audiences in the Archdiocese of Detroit, from clergy and highly engaged Catholics to people interested in learning about the Catholic Church
  • Represent Detroit Catholic and the Archdiocese of Detroit in a professional, courteous and friendly manner

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of reporting experience in digital journalism or community newspapers, or a recent graduate with relevant qualifications and work experience.

Candidates should be self-starters with a good knowledge and interest in a variety of topics related to the Catholic Church and the ability to identify and tell stories of interest to a wide audience. Candidates should have a command of AP style and exceptional interviewing, writing and editing skills.

The ideal candidate should be willing to travel throughout the six-county Archdiocese of Detroit for liturgies, events and interviews, and be able to produce stories on deadline.
