The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking solid, professional writers who can effectively communicate complex breaking discoveries in physics, engineering or related fields of science to join its pool of freelancers. They will write either press releases, targeted to general audiences; or Scilight articles, targeted to professional audiences; or both. These are remote, contracted positions.

Successful candidates would be either professional writers with a strong, demonstrated background or interest in the physical sciences or current graduate students or postdoctoral fellows who have strong, demonstrated writing skills. We will consider hiring writers for both Scilight and press releases as long as they can adhere to the distinct styles of the two types of publications.

  • Scilight articles are 250-word pieces that cover the key concepts and technical details of research appearing in AIP Publishing's peer-reviewed journals as well as its partner journals. These articles are aimed at an audience of academic and broadly technical journal readers (not a general audience). The ideal candidate will have a Master’s or doctoral degree in the physical sciences and strong science writing experience and will take several assignments each month with rolling, approximately one-week, turnaround. Writers will be paid a flat fee of $250 per article.

  • Press releases are 350+ word articles written in a journalistic news style and aimed at a general audience. They also cover breaking research in physics and related fields, but we expect writers to significantly translate the technical content into a more lay-language form and deliver elegant, compelling, well-written prose. Writers will be paid at $1/word.

Scilight articles are considered publications in their own right and carry the bylines of the contracted writers. Press releases are a form of public information and do not carry bylines.

  • Technical familiarity and comfort with complex physical science concepts and the ability to read, understand, and distill peer-reviewed academic publications
  • Science writing prowess, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex material into economic, engaging prose
  • Excellent grammar, composition and proofreading skills, and the ability to adhere to our in-house style
  • Ability to reliably meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work remotely and correspond with editors via email in a timely manner

Please submit at least two original writing samples that demonstrate the ability to write about technical topics in an engaging way.  Resume and writing samples should be emailed to to be considered.
