Description:

Join the Express team! The Washington Post Express is looking for a versatile sports and news editor to join our busy editorial team.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with Express’ style and will embrace a feature-driven approach to sports that goes beyond game stories and box score. You’ll help set the daily sports lineup, manage freelancers, trim down stories (Post, AP and Express originals), select photos, craft clever headlines and other display type and occasionally write short pieces. In addition to steering our sports coverage, you will be expected to pitch in on editing national, world and local news stories as needed.

This job primarily entails inventive packaging of content available from The Washington Post and AP, with some assigning and editing of original Express content as well. The right candidate will be expected to wrangle this available content – supplemented with original work as needed – to produce smart, fresh, engaging, error-free pages under tight deadlines. While familiarity with social media and digital publishing is helpful, this is a print-first editing job. That means the right candidate must possess rock-solid print editing chops — like the ability to cut stories to fit tight spaces, add supplementary sidebar and factbox material, and write sharp headlines within even the most challenging specs. An eye for design is also helpful.

Must-haves: Strong editing skills and news judgment; professional experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; knowledge of AP style, especially sports style; knack for penning great headlines; careful attention to detail; and a flexible and fun attitude.

Please send your résumé, cover letter and salary expectations to workatexpress@washpost.com. Include headline examples and a critique of Express’ sports section.

Published by The Washington Post, Express is read by more than 300,000 commuters Monday through Friday. Express is based in downtown D.C., near McPherson Square Metro.
