The politics beat is one of our most important, given the intense reader interest in national politics in the Trump era and California’s importance as a source of political money and ideas. Along with the political reporters based in California and colleagues in the Washington bureau, the Washington-based political writer will cover the rapidly developing 2020 presidential contest and other major developments on the national political scene.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to cover news and write analyses with a high level of sophistication, authority and accuracy under demanding deadlines. Previous experience covering national politics and a fluency with the tools of political coverage, including polling and demographic analysis, as well as facility with a quick-paced multimedia environment, is strongly preferred.

This job involves considerable travel. Although this is primarily a writing position, we expect our reporters to be comfortable taking photos and basic smart-phone videos.

Applicants should have at least 10 years’ experience. This is a Los Angeles Times Guild position.

Qualified candidates interested in these positions are invited to send a cover letter, resume and links to clips to David Lauter, Washington Bureau Chief, at editjobs@latimes.com.
