MULTIMEDIA JOURNALIST – AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN – AUSTIN, TX.

The Austin American-Statesman is seeking a talented and experienced multimedia journalist to join our award-winning staff. The ideal candidate is a passionate storyteller fluent in stills, video and editing who is capable of balancing high-end project work with deadline driven needs of the newsroom.  They are collaborative with reporters, photographers and editors and ambitious to pitch stories and see them through to publication.

While the position is heavily weighted in video/multimedia, the successful candidate will be capable of excellent still photography for daily and project assignments.

Responsibilities:

Produce high quality multimedia and stills and balance a variety of commitment levels from projects to dailies.                                                                                                                  

Maintain an awareness for analytics and anticipation of upcoming story opportunities that have video opportunities.                                                                                                                  

Active engagement with social media strategies for visuals.                                                      

Assist in shooting arranging and audio engineering of in-studio live music performances (1-2 per month)

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in video, photography, journalism, or other similar related fields (or the equivalent combination of education and experience).

Required:

Three or more years’ experience producing video/photojournalism.
Demonstrated excellence as a visual storyteller.
Demonstrated expertise in video editing and shooting.                                                                                                         

Demonstrated ability to generate and execute creative ideas and collaborate with others.  Experience maintaining high journalistic standards and uncompromising ethics.                  

Strong verbal communication skills.                                                                                                                          

 Ability to work with a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends as needed.                           

Expertise with video and photo editing software including Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop.                                                                                                                               

Strong motivation, a collaborative work ethic and ability to meet deadlines.
 

Preferred:

Experience with motion graphics and animation.                                                                                                      

Keen understanding of SEO and social media best practices and creative approaches to alternative web publication of visuals.                                                                                                                      

Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
