The Mount Vernon Democrat, a paid circulation weekly newspaper in Posey County Indiana, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of editor. The Mount Vernon Democrat is the newspaper record for Posey County, Indiana. Situated along the banks of the Ohio River where the Wabash River joins, Mount Vernon offers a small town, competitive environment while only 20 minutes from Evansville, Ind. The successful candidate will continue a strong tradition of excellence in both the digital, social and print platforms. The editor is a leader in the newsroom and the face of the newspaper in the community. The editor is expected to work with the publisher in planning, budgeting, and promoting the newspaper and its products that include several special publications throughout the year, along with the weekly news product.

  • A degree in journalism or similar field is required
  • A minimum of five years' experience in the newspaper business with experience in managing people is preferred
  • Solid writing (hard news, opinion, and features), researching, editing, and photography are musts
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy plus a proficient knowledge of AP style is necessary
  • Strong electronic page design skills (InDesign CS6 on Macs)
  • Creativeness and the ability to meet deadlines is imperative
  • Working knowledge of the Internet, web-based content and social media
  • Good news judgment along with good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to firmly and constructively manage and instruct others
  • A commitment to quality (to improve content, presentation, and packaging of the news products)
  • Ability to self-direct, self-manage and self-guide a must
  • Availability to cover events that will occur on weekends and evenings
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license to cover assignments


  • Achieve goals for the newspaper that include quality in-depth articles, the ability to investigate hot topics, and maintain a high aesthetic design for the newspaper
  • Plan weekly content, including assigning stories/photo shoots to stringers/freelancers where appropriate
  • Write stories, editorials, and columns, edit copy, take photographs and paginate news and community pages and lead by example in covering any news story needed
  • Be active in community leadership and represent the newspaper in community endeavors
