Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Chair of the Communication Department, the General Manager for Student Media is responsible for providing leadership to the student newspaper the Columbia Chronicle, student magazine Echo, radio station WCRX, and other student outlets, including the ChicagoTalks and AustinTalks community websites. The General Manager is responsible for fostering a culture of journalistic and advertising excellence, and providing leadership and professional development training for students engaged in various media platforms as well as developing and promoting experiences that prepare students for post-graduate employment. The General Manager is also responsible for generating revenue streams and building mutual beneficial partnerships with the campus community, business community, and professional associations and groups.


Duties & Responsibilities

• Work closely with editorial staff—both students and faculty—to uphold high publication standards and professionalism in editorial content.
• Manage the day-to-day flow and selling of advertising for all publications (print/digital) and other media platforms.
• Develop and implement advertising, marketing and promotional plans for the student media outlets housed in the department. Maintain general oversight and ensure accuracy of internal accounting records, including accounts receivable and invoicing requests.
• Analyze business trends, sales statistics, and website analytics to identify sales opportunities and revenue streams; develop and maintain relationships with existing client lists.
• Achieve the advertising revenue goals on a monthly, quarterly and/or annual basis.
• Regularly review and prepare rate structures for broadcast, print and digital advertising/underwriting sales and promotional opportunities. Oversee student workers selling ads, sponsorships, and other revenue-generating activities.
• Supervise production of newspaper, magazine, all multimedia work from initial concept to production. Work with outside vendors to ensure quality production and timely printing schedule.
• Ensure production deadlines (both in print and online) are met for the various student media outlets, working in consultation with faculty advisers who are handling the editorial product.
• Manage IT-related functions of the student media outlets as well as training of student workers on the use of necessary software.
• Assist in the hiring of student workers, in consultation with other faculty and the chair.
• Maintain archive of all student media outlets.
• Responsible for contributing to the strategic mission and vision of the department and creating an inclusive culture that promotes innovation and the utilization of best practices.
• Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in journalism, marketing, advertising or related field required; a master's degree in one of these fields is preferred.
• Minimum five years' experience supervising professional staff.
• Prior media management and advertising sales experience, both in print and digital, is preferred.
• Experience in college student media or related industry, including print, media, web, and digital media a plus.
• Track record of exhibiting leadership behavior and creating a positive, motivating, and productive team environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish detailed production timelines, and manage workflow to meet deadlines.
• Ability to manage multiple, diverse projects at one time is essential.
