KERA Audion fellowship reporting on guns and America
Two-year grant-funded position

Position Summary

KERA seeks a creative, ambitious Reporting Fellow to work in the KERA newsroom as part of Guns & America, a groundbreaking two-year collaborative reporting project focused on the role of guns in American life. The Reporting Fellow will participate as a member of the inaugural cohort of this two-year Audion Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind professional development opportunity for early- to mid-career journalists designed to build and strengthen public media’s pool of talented, cross-platform journalists.

The Audion Fellow at KERA will build a new beat reporting on the many ways Texans interact with guns. The Fellow will create empathetic, surprising journalism about this divisive issue. There will be 10 Audion Fellows reporting for the Guns & America collaborative from partner stations across the U.S. The KERA Audion Fellow will be employed by KERA and will work every day with the Guns & America lead editing team based at WAMU in Washington, D.C. As a member of the KERA newsroom, the Fellow will report directly to a KERA editor and will also work with the station’s other editors.

In addition to a full-time salary and benefits at KERA, the highly competitive Audion Fellowship offers cutting-edge training in digital innovation, investigative reporting techniques and audio storytelling. Fellows will also come together for twice-yearly, weeklong professional development seminars, to be held in various cities throughout the country. Because of the full commitment required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position, Fellows may not be employed elsewhere or engaged in full-time study outside of training offered under the terms of the Audion Fellowship and the employment policies of KERA.

This position is grant-funded for a term of two years; continuation of the position is contingent upon external funding.

Duties of the Reporting Fellow

  • (70%) Develop and own a new beat reporting on the role of guns in American life. Regularly create engaging multimedia stories from reporting, interviews, data and analysis. Bring a distinctive style and approach and find new ways to report on an old issue, striving for greatest impact with deepest substance.

Work as part of KERA’s team to build expertise, contribute compelling story ideas, experiment with innovative storytelling techniques, and work with WAMU’s lead editing team to create a new project from the ground up.

Create and tend a community around the beat, both locally and nationally. Participate in both real-life and social media events.

  • (10%) Engage in innovative professional development experiences developed by the Audion Fellowship, including twice-yearly weeklong meetups, monthly seminars and embed opportunities.
  • (20%) Cover breaking news in North Texas for KERA; develop distinctive stories, from quick turns to in-depth projects, focused in the KERA listening area; and tailor content to multiple platforms for KERA as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate degree in journalism or related field.
  2. Three or more years of professional journalism experience, exemplary journalistic ethics, and proven research, writing, and reporting skills.
  3. Ability to participate in professional development opportunities organized by WAMU that may include travel.
  4. Prior experience building a beat, developing topical expertise and bringing a fresh perspective to vital issues, prioritizing impact.
  5. Willingness to experiment with storytelling methods and to adapt to changing platforms and audience needs.
  6. Agility to shift journalistic modes quickly and nimbly: from deadline reporting to developing explainers; from deep investigative work to producing live events.
  7. Ability to work within a diverse team with varying perspectives, ideas and life experience.
  8. Experience building audiences and communities online, and using connections made within an online community for reporting.
  9. A commitment to cooperation, teamwork, curiosity, and diversity.
