Food Engineering, a monthly B2B magazine serving the food and beverage processing industries, is seeking an Editor In Chief. Food Engineering’s editorial is devoted exclusively to the information needs of plant operations, engineering and corporate executives and delivers a mix of manufacturing editorial covering the latest in plant automation, sanitation, processing equipment, packaging, refrigeration, food safety and plant construction affecting food and beverage manufacturing. This brand is the market leader in a thriving and competitive field and we are looking for someone with technical knowledge, digital and social expertise, and experience with speaker recruitment.

Editor’s Responsibilities

  • Create, produce and deploy quality editorial content in print and on multiple digital platforms.
  • Establish the editorial direction of the brand and all integrated media products.
  • Successfully manage the daily execution of the editorial mission and strategy for the brand.
  • Serve as brand ombudsman.
  • Analyze, measure and recommend strategies to enhance editorial engagement.
  • Produce error-free, stimulating and thought-provoking content for all products. Edit all content, including submitted content.
  • Recruit article content. Utilize contributors when necessary. Manage copyright forms.
  • Manage the editorial team.
  • Ensure all editorial deadlines are met.
  • Follow BNP Media’s code of ethics and Editorial Guidelines; maintain journalistic integrity.
  • Collaborate with brand team and appropriate BNP Media staff on the look, feel and user experience with all products.
  • Plan annual editorial calendar. Collaborate with publisher and brand team to identify content opportunities. Identify new solutions and make recommendations to implement based on the industry and changing digital market.
  • Serve as a brand liaison to internal departments (ie, web, social, eNews, etc.); and work cooperatively and collaboratively with BNP staff.

Specific job responsibilities include:


  • Produce (12) print issues per year.
  • Write monthly editor’s page and feature stories
  • Plan, assign and execute issue content, editorial, photography and cover artwork.
  • Create original editorial content. Edit the work of others. 
  • Use AP Style and proofread all editorial pages, including headlines, captions, folio and masthead. 
  • Choose Plant of the Year winner
  • Review respective coverage with EIC of Refrigerated & Frozen Foods on on-going basis as needed.


  • Provide direction and supervision to Online Support Coordinator for posting issue content and other editorial.
  • Regularly monitor and supervise FE website, evaluate content boxes and static sections, respond to comments and view stats. Review navigation bar on a bi-annual basis for updates and changes.
  • Goal: Increase website traffic and variety/amount of online content.


  • Create and deploy monthly eNewsletter per pre-determined schedule, following BNP Media’s eNews Guidelines.
  • Include editorial content and links that drive traffic back to brand website.
  • Monitor/review stats for each edition.
  • Maintain copies of eNewsletters for archive.
  • Goal: increase eNewsletter open and click-through rates. Make recommendations for improving newsletter.

Social Media

  • Monitor and supervise FE’s Social Media’s editorial activities.
  • Goal: increase the amount and variety of content items, resulting in increased followers and/or engagement.

Multimedia and Events

  • Supervise any editorial multi-media efforts such as video and podcasts.
  • Conduct and moderate brand webinars.
  • Create FA&M Conference program; recruit food & beverage processor speakers and panelists; prepare State of Food Manufacturing presentation and other presentations for conference; manage speaker rehearsal on site; emcee event.

Other Duties

  • Management responsibilities (ie, supervise, train, assign duties to FE editorial team and review work of Technical, Departmental, and Digital/Online Editor)
  • Back up all materials and editorial files on a BNP Media server.
  • Attend required BNP Media editorial training and webinars.
  • Administrative duties and other tasks as assigned and required.
  • Adhere to all BNP Media policies as outlined in the staff manual.
  • Provide editorial copy for marketing pieces when appropriate. 
  • Create and maintain team travel schedules or trade show appointments.
  • Speak at industry events when requested.  
  • Support custom editorial opportunities via BNP’s OrangeTap division.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with experienced food industry freelancers and industry analysts.
  • Develop monthly editorial schedule for FE sales staff.
  • Manage editorial content of special supplements and advertorials.
  • Visit and tour at least one food/beverage plant per year
  • Report any obstacles to the success of FE to the Publisher.
  • Work effectively with Food Engineering sales team and their customers as needed.


·        Candidates location in Chicagoland area preferred

·        Ability to travel when necessary for tradeshows, plant tours, and cover features as needed

·        Excellent communication, writing and editing skills for print and digital

·        Ability to multi-task, and to work successfully under deadline pressures

  • Editorial experience in the food and beverage industry desired.

·        Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and experience in print and online journalism as well as prior experience with speaker recruitment.
