The Danville Register & Bee has an entry-level position for a tenacious digger who doesn't like being told to go away - our courts and cops beat. The person to fill this job hates press releases and insists on racing to the scene and knocking on doors to find the true story. The right person is ready to learn, because here we teach that no one will ever let a good reporter through the front door, so the only way to get the story is through a back door, a basement window, the chimney, whatever. In this beat the daily lesson plan is that a keen understanding of FOIA laws is the foundation for playing the game. Here, you will hone your skills for a year or two and move up to bigger publications. That's what we do. Just know this is a job for someone hungering to dig deep into court and government documents and learn how to interview the data. All you need to bring to the table is tenacity, a fire in your belly and the writing chops to set a scene. The Danville-Pittsylvania County region is a rural area known for tobacco farms, scenic views and ties to the Civil War and the Civil Rights era. If this post describes you, email a cover letter, resume and links to your three best clips to Managing Editor Mike Owens at The subject line should read: Courts and Cops Reporter.
