The Dallas Morning News is seeking a strong writer and reporter to cover Dallas County government. The reporter is responsible for covering the politics and policy of the county and bringing figures in government to life for readers. The job includes daily beat coverage as well as medium and long term enterprise requirements. The successful candidate is expected to be capable with public records and source building. It is crucial this reporter focus not on rote meeting coverage but on accountability journalism that demonstrates the importance of this beat to our readers. The county reporter should be comfortable writing about a range of topics, such as the commissioners and their political feuds, public health, the county jail, juvenile detention and Parkland Memorial Hospital. A strong social media presence is important. The reporter should hold elected officials -- such as the sheriff, commissioners and judges -- to account for any poor decisions, incompetence or broken promises. The county reporter should also be flexible and prepared to engage in projects outside of the beat, including spot news coverage of major events around the state. The reporter should be ready to bring an enterprising and investigative eye to these events, writing with depth and feeling in a way that engages readers.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelors’ degree in journalism, communications or related field.
  • Must have at least three years experience at a major news organization.
