FloridaPolitics.com is looking for an aggressive, web-savvy reporter to focus on Southeast Florida and particularly Broward County, one of the critical political centers of the state. The right candidate will cover both state and local issues relevant to the region, as well as other nongovernment stories as assigned.

In essence, we are looking for someone who will own the beat and drive the conversation.

This person must be a self-starter with a record of accomplishment of successful source-building and is adept at setting the news agenda through working sources and reporting breaking news before other outlets. Our reporters must carry traditional journalism skills — source building, interviewing techniques, analysis and investigative reporting, clear writing, document research — as well as a working knowledge of online and social media best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualified candidates will have at least three years of experience, as well as a proven ability to see the Florida Capitol assignment as a regular beat. He/she must have an ability to write and edit quality, accurate content on deadline with rapidly changing priorities. The ideal individual will have superior organizational skills, a working knowledge of Florida state government, prior experience reporting on legislative sessions and an ability tell compelling stories of how decisions on the state level impact the lives of Florida citizens.

Additional requirements include: Understanding real-time reporting; ability to create multimedia packages — including video and photos — using digital storytelling tools; familiarity with social media, including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook; assertive and creative political coverage; be results-oriented and comprehend the use of statistical data in editorial decisions as well as a passion for news and online journalism.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with an educational background in journalism, communications or related field
  • 1-3 years’ experience reporting and digital writing in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with photo editing and equipment, from smartphones to professional-grade cameras, is a plus
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Reliable transportation
