AAAS has an exciting full-time opportunity for an Associate Editor, Science Careers in the news department of Science magazine, based in Washington, DC. Reporting to the Science Careers editor, the Associate Editor joins a three-person team aimed at serving the needs of scientists, particularly graduate students and postdocs, as they pursue their careers. We seek an early-career journalist who is passionate about service journalism; is broadly familiar with the culture of academic research and sympathetic to scientists, particularly those who are early in their careers; and has experience writing about related topics, such as higher education, workforce issues, or science policy.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow the news in careers, including higher education, workforce issues, diversity and inclusion, and mental health among scientists
  • Conceive, report, and write enterprise pieces, including features, profiles, data stories, and new, innovative formats
  • Work with freelance writers and columnists to develop stories and essays and edit them for publication
  • Interact with Science’s News team to promote cross-pollination and collaboration on stories that bridge News and Careers
  • Work with Science’s Digital Media team on art and other components for online publication


Key Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism or related field or/and have completed a science writing program.
  • Two to three years of experience as a reporter covering higher education or workforce issues or in-service journalism
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in editing journalism articles
  • Strong research background is a plus
  • Familiarity with social media is a plus
