The Wharton Journal-Spectator located in Wharton, Texas, a semiweekly newspaper a hop, skip and a jump from Houston, is seeking an energetic Managing Editor to run the news operations. This is a hands-on, self-starter position that will stretch you as much as it rewards you. Duties include beat and general assignment reporting, assignment/line editing, photography, page production and representing the newspaper in the community of about 20,000 people, all told. Advance-planning skills are essential, as are a writerly touch, a good eye for photos and design, and the ability to stay cool under pressure. The Managing Editor is also responsible for the weekly East Bernard Express. Together, the newspapers have a circulation of roughly 5,500 households in eastern Wharton County, and the pay is highly competitive for this size of market.
