Desired Qualities of the Associate Editor:

We seek a journalist who is fascinated by traditional editorial processes yet who also embraces the open air of the Internet and of digital publishing. You’ve thrived through the print age, but you are also undaunted and excited by the newest digital publishing technologies. In a nutshell, you don’t wince when people say print is dying but instead see the possibilities as endless. Knowledge of the industry or other related automotive and technology industries is preferred, but a solid news judgment and a thorough, demonstrated understanding of journalism style and correct grammar usage are musts.  You are a sponge for information, and you possess the ability to identify and communicate nuance. You are adept at connecting dots for readers between what is occurring in the industry and what is occurring in the larger world.  You are an energizing person, seen not only in your articles but in your work ethic and style and how you interact with your co-workers. You are an excellent communicator. You possess outstanding judgment as a journalist as well as a leader. You have the ability to draw people together to share in ideas so that they feel they own it as a team.  While you’re work responsibilities dictate that you question everything, you are not cynical, you are not inflexible and you are all about being part of a team working toward company success.

The Associate Editor is responsible for writing news for print and online, as well as coordinating editorial and other publishing projects as assigned by the Editor-in-Chief. In doing so, you are accountable for the accurate completion of editorial and related projects on schedule and within budget that exceed the expectations of the Editor in Chief. Rather than managing or supervising staff members, you are responsible for fostering the organization, creativity and collaboration necessary to complete tasks. You promote teamwork and the sharing of ideas. The Associate Editor possesses a keen eye for the most important topics of today and connects them with the forecasted issues of tomorrow. The ability to communicate these in both written and spoken word is essential as is the desire to make a difference and wear many hats for a growing media company.

Primary Duties:
You are a writer-editor: You not only report on what is going on but inform readers as to why it is happening and how and why it is affecting or will affect them. You provide nuance and promote that quality throughout the editorial department and company. You accomplish this by writing stories and features for the print magazine and online and by communicating and collaborating with editorial and creative staff. You regularly meet with the Editor-in-Chief to receive overall editorial direction, to communicate the status of current editorial and to help plan the execution of magazine, online and other projects. Then you manage the day-to-day editorial operation, beginning with the pitch meeting and culminating with final upload of the monthly book. You serve as the first line of defense against inaccuracies, promoting solid journalistic and STN Media style to all articles written by staff members and contributors alike. You make recommendations for improving the accuracy and efficiency of print and online production processes.

Secondary Duties:

Coordinate your print and online editorial activities with those of overall editorial goals; contribute to the monthly and weekly editorial and photo budget; work collaboratively with other staff in completing projects; participate in editorial strategizing; assist the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher in ensuring that advertisers remain a viable part of the editorial conversation both in print and online; coordinate curriculum for conferences, as needed; coordinate special editorial projects; contribute and complete electronic newsletters; drive and contribute to social media campaigns; publish monthly digital publications. Other duties, as assigned.
