The Havre Daily News is looking for a full-time beat and general assignment reporter.
The reporter would be required to generate daily stories on both scheduled events and breaking news as well as feature stories and enterprise pieces. The topics could include kindgergarten programs to city council meetings, state and federal government and politics ranging from campaign events to federal cabinet secretaries visiting the area, and breaking news such as local and federal-level disasters to armed standoffs and murders.
Havre, a county seat, is the largest city with the most activities in our coverage area, but we cover four counties with seven other towns including two other county seats and two American Indian reservations. The main economic forces are agriculture, BNSF Railway, a regional hospital and two community health centers, a state university and two community colleges.
Our coverage area runs from about 60 miles west to about 40 miles east, north 40 miles to the Canadian border and occasionally into Canada and south about 35 miles.
Havre is an incorporated community of about 10,000 people with a good business community including chain stores like Walmart and Kmart and local businesses in a variety of fields and a good social atmosphere including an active theater troupe and community orchestra and chorus. A variety of outdoor activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing and snowshoeing in the Bear Paw Mountains to the south and on private, state and federal land to the east and west, including several good-sized lakes and reservoirs. The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument interpretive center is about an hour away and Glacier National Park is about three hours and Yellowstone National Park is about 6 hours away.
A journalism degree or reporting experience will be considered in an application. Position will start February 24, 2020.
