Manager, Media Outreach

Rewire ( is a daily online publication for evidence-based news, analysis, commentary, and investigative reporting on health, rights, and justice. Our work is based on the core role of journalism in a democratic society: to foster public knowledge and dispel misinformation on issues more commonly shrouded in misinformation and ideology. The Manager, Media Outreach will promote Rewire’s content to several core audiences—primarily to other media outlets (including print, broadcast, and online outlets), as well as to policymakers, researchers, lawyers, health providers, and advocates— through targeted marketing and by building key relationships.  The Manager, Media Outreach will also field press requests; promote Rewire staff as speakers and experts; and create and execute plans to increase visibility of Rewire’s content and brand with identified audiences. This position will initially report to Rewire’s VP of Development, but in the longer term will report to a future audience engagement team leader. 

The Manager, Media Outreach will:

  • Conceptualize, develop and execute a 12-month growth plan for identified audiences;

  • Work with editors and reporters to determine which articles, series, and issues to highlight and promote;

  • Build relationships with reporters, editorial writers, and columnists in broadcast, online, and print media and proactively pitch and promote Rewire articles and investigative research to other media outlets;

  • Proactively pitch Rewire staff and writers for media appearances to broadcast, cable news, and radio outlets;

  • Supervise and/or execute the writing, editing, and distribution of press releases, tip sheets, memos to editorial boards, and develop other materials as necessary;

  • Serve as the main point of contact with media for Rewire;

  • Track and maintain regular records of media outreach and coverage, media mentions, and links to Rewire’s work;

  • Stay up-to-date on news and news cycles and engage with editorial team on opportunities to  inform/shift/disrupt media framing of our core issues;

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with communications counterparts at other relevant entities;

  • Manage and track outputs of Rewire media partnerships across the country;

  • Work directly and collaboratively with multimedia and social media staff;

  • Carry out plans and tasks identified by evolving audience engagement strategies;

  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned and as the site and organization grow.


The ideal candidate for this position demonstrates:

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in communications, preferably for media/journalism entities or related to reproductive, racial, economic, and/or environmental justice;

  • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, presentation, and analytical skills;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to collaborate effectively within and among staff teams;

  • Extensive experience in working with new, social, and traditional media;

  • Proven experience in cultivating a media or similar outreach network;

  • Ability to work independently as well as participate on a team;

  • Demonstrated experience as a disciplined self-starter who can set and achieve goals and is comfortable working remotely;

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines;

  • Ability to work quickly and effectively in a fast-paced environment;

  • Comfort and skill at communicating with very diverse audiences.
