Wanted: Rock star managing editor

South Carolina Living magazine, the Palmetto State’s largest print publication, seeks a can-do, multitalented journalist to be our new managing editor.

While there is a heavy emphasis on copy editing, proofreading and copy/art trafficking in this job, our ideal candidate is a seasoned pro who loves to do it all—write, line edit, manage and coach freelance contributors, organize photo shoots, collaborate with designers and execute creative digital and social content. If you know your way around a camera, that’s a plus, too.

Reporting to the executive editor, you’ll work hard as part of a small team of talented staffers and freelance contributors and vendors. The job can be demanding, but if you’re looking for a place to do great work, this is it. You’ll have the opportunity to put your stamp on a growing print magazine brand, and be rewarded with competitive pay and benefits.

Experience in magazine or newspaper journalism is required. You must love storytelling and be a prolific generator of story ideas that fulfill our editorial mission to celebrate the people, places, food, lifestyle, travel opportunities and culture that make South Carolina such a great place to live, work and play.

The position is full-time. You’ll be based in our offices in Cayce, South Carolina, just across the river from downtown Columbia and the University of South Carolina. It’s Monday–Friday work most of the time but as with any publication, chasing good stories may require extensive travel within the state, as well as some nights and weekends.

About us:

South Carolina Living is published 11 times a year by The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc., for the members of the state’s consumer-owned electric cooperatives. How to apply:

Send a resume, one-page cover letter, three clips and—this is important—a roster of three well-developed story ideas you’d like to write for the magazine if hired. Each description should be at least one paragraph long, outlining the story and how it fits South Carolina Living, the sources you plan to use, your initial art/design/layout concepts, and any web-content extensions that spring to mind.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Seven to 10 years of professional experience as a writer, editor, copy editor and/or managing editor, with three to five years’ experience supervising writers, editors and/or designers. Print magazine or newspaper experience strongly preferred. Prior experience with a statewide cooperative magazine is a plus.
  • Outstanding copyediting and proofreading skills. Mastery of AP style is a must. You’ll be the chief copy editor/keeper of our local style book, so, yes—there will be a copyediting test.
  • Ability to communicate and work respectfully with coworkers and contributors. We value team players who can work collaboratively but also execute assignments independently.
  • Must live in, or be willing to relocate to, South Carolina, and be available to work in a traditional office setting.
