Job Description

Route Fifty seeks a sharp, driven and highly efficient managing editor to oversee its daily news operation. As the newest, fastest growing publication of Government Executive Media Group, we need our managing editor to help our dedicated team continue to establish Route Fifty as the go-to source for those looking to understand the changing state and local government landscape. We’re looking for someone to manage our efforts to provide smart, indispensable, accessible and timely coverage of key issues of interest to state and local government officials.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Planning and prioritizing daily news coverage
  • Editing and posting news stories from staff reporters
  • Monitoring other Atlantic Media publications and partner organizations to share content on state and local issues
  • Representing Route Fifty at events and meetings
  • Managing the process of sharing Route Fifty stories on social media
  • Participating in efforts to grow Route Fifty’s audience through editorial products and events
  • Editing articles from external contributors
  • Helping develop new online tools
  • Assisting in producing ebooks and digital special reports


Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

  • 3+ years of professional journalistic experience as an editor and/or writer
  • Strong editing, writing and analytical skills and high attention to detail
  • Experience working with online content management systems
  • Ability to direct the day-to-day work of a team of reporters in a collaborative work environment and to shift between short-term needs and long-term projects
  • A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude
