The Poynter Institute has an immediate opening for a Naughton Fellow. It’s a unique opportunity to pioneer a hybrid role that encompasses writing about the media, crafting useful content for B2B journalists and helping grow poynter.org’s audience.

Let us explain a little more. Poynter is partnering with the American Society of Business Publication Editors to create a one-year position that will help that organization’s members sharpen their skills while at the same time keeping poynter.org’s readers informed.

The Naughton Fellow will be expected to write one story a week for the ASBPE site, as well as promote it on social media. Examples of stories include how-to’s, best practices, resources on a shoestring, trends and fact-checking — all for a B2B audience. The beauty of it is that these are all things a more general journalism audience will enjoy as well on poynter.org. Your work will likely appear on both sites.

The Naughton Fellow will also be expected to write breaking news stories on the media, as well as enterprise and feature stories for poynter.org, the Institute’s popular and well-visited website.

This is a position that requires daily news experience. We’re looking for someone who has fearless interviewing skills, the ability to generate story ideas and the persistence to develop sources for the media beat. You’ll work closely with the managing editor of poynter.org, and be surrounded by our faculty and our colleagues at PolitiFact, the International Fact Checking Network and Poynter’s News University.

TITLE:                        Naughton Fellow

REPORTS TO:           Managing Editor of Poynter.org

OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY

This job encompasses dual responsibilities. In the first, the Naughton Fellow will be responsible for producing one story per week for ASBPE’s website. The same stories will be posted to ASBPE’s Facebook and Twitter feed. All content is edited by Poynter Editorial Leadership. (Potential examples include: how to’s, best practices, resources on a shoestring, trends and fact-checking — all for a B2B audience.)

Other responsibilities for the position will include writing breaking media news stories as well as news, feature and enterprise stories that resonate with readers of Poynter.org.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Initiates and executes original reporting and writing on topics of interest to journalists.
  • Contributes to quality control of site in order to minimize discrepancies, errors and inappropriate content fact-checking information given to you by a source.
  • Stays current and informed on B2B and journalism industry issues, innovations and trends in order to help Poynter Online be ever more responsive to the interests and needs of its constituents.
  • Develops knowledge sources and stories in beat/subbeats.
  • Experiments with new technologies (i.e. video, maps, games, etc.).
  • Assists with managing and growing Poynter’s and ASBPE’s social media presence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to the Managing Editor of Poynter.org.  The Managing Editor of Poynter.org is responsible for conducting daily and long-term assignments under general direction. Must be able to work independently and to collaborate with others.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

INTERNAL:  Requires extensive collaboration with other members of the Marketing/Online/Publications department, faculty and staff throughout Poynter.

EXTERNAL: Requires contact with journalists at all levels in various media organizations and others in the process of reporting.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:  A bachelor’s degree is required.  This position requires the ability to meet deadlines, think critically and act in accordance with Poynter's ethics and standards. The Naughton Fellow must have reporting and writing experience, preferably in print, online and for broadcast. Advanced computer skills are also a must, along with an understanding of online journalism. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are required.

PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING: Requires ability to work independently with excellent judgment and discretion about when to involve others.

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Primarily sedentary, as bulk of tasks is performed at a computer workstation. Physical requirements include ability to see and color perception in order to proofread, edit on paper and onscreen, and create and view graphics. The employee must have the ability to manipulate fingers to operate computer keyboard and mouse. The Naughton Fellow will be expected to work under and meet precise deadlines. Routine interruptions and unforeseen assignments are to be expected.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed in a non-smoking office environment. The workstation is unobstructed and the Naughton Fellow can expect moderate noise levels from adjacent areas.

OTHER INFORMATION:  This full-time, hourly position will work a five-day schedule, defined as Monday through and including Friday. The Naughton Fellow will generally work between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., during the Institute's normal business hours. Hours will vary depending on events, news developments, etc. The employee is entitled to one-hour (unpaid) for lunch and two 15-minute (paid) breaks. This position may require some overtime and some travel.

Hourly Rate Range:  $15-$18 per hour, based on 37.50-hour workweek
