Description:

Retiring freelance editor/writer seeks replacement for a substantive quarterly publication with an excellent client.

Assignment Summary

Plan, research, write and lay out quarterly internal news magazine for privately held, growth-oriented manufacturer with 4,000 employees, 30 locations and several product lines. Interview 50 to 70 employees per issue. Write 40 articles, about 200-250 words each. Layout 12 pages, each 8.5 x 11, using existing elementary Indesign template.

Key duties and responsibilities

• Conduct lively interviews that inspire employees to speak to the heart and passion of their processes, products and customers.

• Develop rapport with front-line machine operators, team leaders, mid-level managers, specialists and executives.

• Write concise, no-fluff, engaging news features that show – not tell – company strategies in action from the employee point of view. Reinforce company values and key messages through real-world examples and best practice-sharing. Continue a 12-year legacy of substantive, employee-focused communication.

• Treat company as a “beat” and cover all aspects of business, functions, locations and trends. Track future topics. Develop sources. Participate in quarterly planning sessions with marketing and HR leaders.

• Coordinate and plan 30+ photos through supervisors and interviewees. Use elementary Photoshop skills to adjust for printing.

• Copy edit and layout in Indesign. Write lively headlines and captions. Proof with contributors and marketing team.

Essential for success

• Demonstrated expertise in human interest news/feature storytelling from point of view of employee.

• Ability to break down complex business concepts into everyday language without over-simplification.

• Project management skills and tools.

• Strong command of English and Associated Press Style.

• Astute sense of appropriate style, voice and tone. Independent judgment, discretion and objectivity. History of handling confidential and sensitive information appropriately.

• Fluent in elementary Indesign, Word and Photoshop.

• Understanding of Lean manufacturing, change management and continuous improvement a plus.

Education and experience

Bachelor’s degree in journalism with business experience or degree in business with newspaper experience.

Ten to 20 years experience.
