Description:

The O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism is accepting applications from full-time journalists for its fall 2018 class of O'Brien fellows. The deadline to apply is Jan. 26, 2018.

Since 2013, O’Brien has supported investigative or explanatory reporting projects by 18 journalists from around the country. Three to five fellows are selected annually, taking up residence at Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communication, home to the fellowship.

Fellows receive a $65,000 stipend for the nine-month academic year and can tap generous allotments for housing, travel and research.

In service of the fellowship’s mission to investigate problems and potential solutions, O’Brien projects have tackled issues around water pollution and drought, workplace dangers, firearms lethality, poor access to health care, mistreatment of persons with mental illness, government secrecy, animal-borne disease threats, fugitives from justice and more.

Projects can involve topics of local, state, national or international interest. Stories by O’Brien Fellows have earned prestigious honors.

Fellows have worked as staff or freelance journalists. Applications are welcome from journalists whose work would appear in or on newspapers, radio, television, websites, documentary films, online publications or magazines. Fellows work with student researchers who assist on each project.

The online application form, due by Jan. 26, call for a résumé, detailed project proposal, personal statement, biography, work samples and letters of recommendation.

Questions can be directed to Dave Umhoefer, O’Brien Fellowship director (david.umhoefer@marquette.edu; (414) 288-5956.

The O’Brien Fellowship is funded by the family of Marquette alumni Perry and Alicia O’Brien.
