The Gallup Independent is a 9,000 afternoon daily newspaper located in Indian Country in New Mexico and Arizona. The Independent is the third-largest daily newspaper in New Mexico and a constant winner in the NMPA/APME Better Newspaper Contest for photography in the large newspaper category. We are seeking a photojournalist who can maintain our tradition for photo excellence.

As a photojournalist at the Gallup Independent, you will be required — and depended on — to be highly proficient with daily assignments including spot news, feature stand alone images and portraiture on short notice. You must be experienced and prepared to photograph sporting events of all types; including basketball, track/cross country, volleyball, baseball/softball and rodeo in Arizona and New Mexico year-round.  Your captions must be clear and accurate and you must posses excellent personal communication skills for both the newsroom and in the field.  Be prepared to hit the ground running from day one.

For all assignments, you must be ready to travel the Four Corners to document the lives of those who live in this ruggedly beautiful land and be open to diverse cultures and customs which may or may not be foreign to you.

This is a full-time position with complete benefits. You must have dependable transportation to cover all assignments.  A full load-out of Nikon DSLR equipment will be provided, with some of the larger lenses shared between photographers.  Pre-employment drug screen required.
