Public Safety Reporter

Savannah Morning News/ is looking for a Public Safety Reporter to take on one of the busiest beats in our coverage area.

You, with another public safety reporter, will be responsible for breaking, daily and enterprise reporting involving all police, fire and other public safety departments in Chatham County. You must be able to work quickly and accurately, and go beyond the information contained in a press release about an incident.

You must have the drive and skills to tell the stories of crime beyond the initial events. Crime impacts the perpetrators, the victims and our entire community. It’s your job to tell their stories.

If you’re afraid of hard work and hustle, this isn’t the job for you.

Successful candidates must have: two to five years experience as a reporter (preference given to those with experience covering crime); superb communication skills; the ability to juggle daily stories and short- and long-term enterprise reporting; phenomenal planning and multi-tasking skills; a strong attention to detail; excellence with writing for online and social media in the moment and then turning that into excellent copy for print.

To apply, send your resume, cover letter, references and links to at least five substantial stories you’ve covered to Josh Rayburn, multimedia content editor, at

No phone calls, please.
