International Business Times is looking for a digitally-savvy and energetic deputy editor to help lead the viral news team in New York.

You must have a knack for SEO and potentially viral content. The Deputy Viral News Editor is expected to pitch and write at least three 500-word stories a day while also publishing stories from other writers.

The ideal candidate will thrive on breaking news and be excited to find unique angles on trending news. You must be ahead of the news cycle and feel comfortable working in a fast-paced, breaking news environment.

You will enjoy the challenge of meeting competitive traffic goals and thrive under pressure.

You will be expected to work with the Viral News Editor to devise coverage plans.

The Deputy Viral News Editor reports to the Viral News Editor.

The successful candidate will be organized and goal-oriented and able to publish work of the highest quality while also pitching and writing stories of his or her own. She or he should also have extreme attention to detail and a system for multi-tasking.

This is a noon to 8 p.m. shift.


Key attributes, experience and skills:

  • Track record of building engaged digital audiences through story ideas, SEO, social media skills and other practices
  • Determination to not get beat by the competition
  • Experience covering and editing U.S. and international news
  • Proven experience building and running a successful newsroom
  • Strong mentoring skills
  • The ability to work under pressure to deadlines and on a flexible schedule. Because of the need to coordinate across regions, it’s important that the candidate is willing to accommodate work after regular office hours and occasionally cover weekend shifts.
  • Must have authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Should have at least five years of newsroom experience


  • Helping to run the day-to-day breaking news operations in the New York newsroom
  • Mentoring reporters and working with them to improve copy, story ideas and headlines
  • Editing original content for publication on the IBT website
  • Working as part of a team to make IBT’s coverage as strong and coherent as possible, including working with video and social media editors
  • Ensuring online content conforms to best practice, including SEO, and meets content and quality standards
