The Office of Communications, Marketing & Public Affairs (OCMPA) handles media relations, marketing and advertising, publications, and web content. The office is also responsible for Baruch College’s brand identity, internal and external communications, and the marketing initiatives of Baruch’s three schools (aka: clients): the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. OCMPA also collaborates with the Offices of College Advancement and Alumni Relations surrounding fundraising and alumni events as well as alumni publications.

Driven by high standards in a deadline-aware environment, the Communications Writer/Editor will be a strong web writer/editor with a keen eye for, and data-driven understanding of, SEO and UX. The writer/editor will also serve as the content lead for the College’s weekly e-newsletter and as an editorial resource and project manager for a variety of print, digital, and multimedia projects tailored to internal and external audiences. The position reports to the Director of Communications and works closely with the Senior Writer/Editor. The Communications Writer/Editor will also collaborate with the larger department, including designers, project and multimedia managers, directors of public relations and government affairs, the executive director, and OCMPA’s vice president.

Responsibilities:

  • As part of a longer-term website overhaul, advise clients in the three schools and in administrative units on webpage organization, messaging, and SEO. Edit web content for clarity, SEO, and institutional standards.
  • Serve as the editorial lead for the College’s weekly internal e-newsletter. Gather and organize content from sources around the College; craft short, engaging ledes for each item; format the newsletter with appropriate photos and links; seek feedback on drafts; and distribute on Monday mornings.
  • Draft and/or edit and distribute institutional announcements.
  • Project manage the creation of print and digital marketing materials and collateral from conceptualization with the client, through design and editorial review, to print or distribution.
  • Copy edit/proofread materials for logic, clarity, and Baruch style. Copy write headlines and short, engaging prose as materials may require.
  • Interview and gather information from faculty, staff, and/or students.
  • Draft and/or edit faculty and staff profiles and brand-journalism articles.
  • Serve as project manager on key projects, assigning and managing deadlines with departmental colleagues and clients around the College.
  • Draft video scripts, serve as interviewer during video shoots, and advise on content flow in video production.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Available to work onsite 5 days per week (30 hours per week) between 9 am and 5 pm.
  • A minimum of four years’ work experience in writing, editing, and project management for various audiences is required. A combination of training and editorial experience, earned through internships as well as full- and part-time positions, in a variety of formats (web, marketing collateral, institutional communications, newsletters, and other business communications) will also be considered.
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills; professional writer’s voice.
  • Must be detail orientated with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • A bachelor’s in marketing, journalism, communications, English, or related field is required.
  • Web writing experience with foci on brief, engaging copy and SEO essential.
  • Experience with turnkey formatting tools in a digital platform, such as MailChimp, preferred. 
  • Understanding of the visual aesthetics and the conventions of graphic design preferred.
  • Background in video scripting and content editing a bonus.
  • Familiarity with higher education marketing and communications a plus.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a strategic creative team and work productively with people at all organizational levels.
