We are seeking a journalist who can cover the news and create a variety of content for print and online platforms in performing the government watchdog role and informing the people of Michigan's Upper Peninsula of news and information they need and want to know. Based in Houghton, Michigan, the Daily Mining Gazette newsroom is a practical journalism lab offering entry-level journalists a variety of opportunities to produce news content that meets high standards of professional quality and ethics and provides readers the information they want and need.

Reporters for the Daily Mining Gazette are expected to provide the people of the Copper Country-Keweenaw Peninsula area with all the standard coverage of breaking news, public safety news, education, economic development and municipal, county and township government, in addition to political and election coverage. These reporters are also assigned features and content pieces for special and advertorial products. Page design duties are also included when needed. We are looking only for committed journalists who have an eye, ear and nose for enterprise news and want to chase down leads, dig for facts, perform hard-news interviews and report the facts and truth on behalf of the people.

This mostly rural coverage area is an outdoor mecca at the top of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, bordered by Lake Superior and hardwood and pine forest, which includes Isle Royale National Park, Michigan Technological University, Finlandia University, four major hospitals, some of the best alpine and nordic skiing in the Midwest, some of the best trail systems for four-season non-motorized and motorized uses, golf courses, hunting, fishing and much more outdoor recreational opportunities.

If you are seeking an opportunity to break into the news business by working for a professional community newspaper that provides advanced training in print and online journalism, and feel up to the challenge, send a cover letter describing your commitment, resume and up to three of your best pieces of journalism to Craig Peterson, Daily Mining Gazette managing editor.
