Associate Editor

Cincinnati Magazine is a monthly city magazine focusing on service, city and regional issues, and lifestyles for an upscale readership. Paid circulation is currently 36,533.

Job Overview:

Cincinnati Magazine is looking for a curious, creative, highly motivated journalist to handle a broad range of editorial duties in the conception, coordination, and execution of a monthly city magazine. The ideal candidate for this full-time position will have magazine writing and editing experience (with a focus on copyediting and proofreading), strong organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with other members of the art and editorial team on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines. Familiarity with Cincinnati is vital.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, concept, assign, edit, and write stories for the magazine’s regular sections, which include Radar (covering shops, local craftspeople, travel, and style), Frontlines (stories behind news of the day, events, and the arts), and Dine (restaurant reviews, dining news, and food trends)
  • Edit and write stories for the magazine’s custom projects and special sections, some of which are inserted into or delivered with the monthly magazine and some of which are produced as stand-alone publications
  • Assist in the proof routing process: make proof corrections, facilitate communication between art and editorial staff, review proofs at all stages of production
  • Work with the Digital Media Editor to participate in any and all digital initiatives, including (but not limited to) regular contributions to the magazine’s blogs, creation of web exclusive stories, posting of existing stories to the website, promoting the magazine through social media
  • Generate ideas for all sections of the magazine, website, and digital properties
  • Report and write pieces for all service packages as well as other sections of the magazine as needed and available
  • Other tasks at the direction of the Director of Editorial Operations and Editor-in-Chief

Education/Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism or English, at least two years’ experience in the publishing industry (preferably magazines), a highly developed eye for detail, and an endless curiosity about Cincinnati people, places and institutions
  • Must be familiar with OSX, InDesign, Word, and Excel on the Macintosh platform plus the usual social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.)
  • Candidate must be enthusiastic, highly organized, self-motivated, and possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Application Process:

Please submit your resume and application information to Amanda Boyd Walters via e-mail: amanda@cincinnatimagazine.com. Include a cover letter that will convince me you’re the best candidate for the position and three writing samples. Please also submit a critique of the content in one of the current magazine sections (Radar, Frontlines, Dine) and three or more story ideas for that section, using current rubrics (Style Counsel, Escape, Speak Easy, The Rundown, Hot Plate, Tableside, etc.).

NO PHONE CALLS OR WALK-INS ACCEPTED. Only qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
