The Deseret News seeks an energetic and dynamic digital journalist to cover the Utah Jazz and the National Basketball Association.

  • Compete and break through in an active sports media market

  • Work with web producers and editors to grow audience
  • Recognize and adapt to trends in digital sports journalism

  • Interact with Jazz players and management to find breaking news and in-depth stories
  • Collaborate with and provide direction to colleagues who assist in covering the Jazz and the NBA
  • Be consistently engaged on social media, interacting with NBA influencers and fans

  • Passionate and knowledgable about the NBA and its franchises, coaches, players, history and trends
  • Both fast and accurate
  • Resourceful in giving context to and providing analysis for breaking news
  • Able to build stories throughout a news cycle, developing them from breaking news briefs to in-depth perspective pieces
  • Willing to experiment with new storytelling formats
  • Good at developing relationships
  • Able to thrive on the rigors of an NBA travel schedule
  • Capable of producing stories that move the needle and bring in new audience

  • Focus almost exclusively on a digital audience
  • Have experience working in NBA locker rooms
  • Hold a degree in journalism or media studies
  • Are comfortable with change and can adapt to a consistently evolving media landscape
  • Have multiple years of experience working in a newsroom
  • Can write killer longform features while covering the beat like a blanket
  • Are able to name the NBA's all-time assists leader, its No. 2 all-time scorer and the man traded to Philadelphia for Jeff Hornacek in 1994
