Description:

Are you an experienced writer with a passion for personal stories? Do you have a talent for documenting the color and details of a life story in a first-person dramatic narrative format? If so, we need you!

Good Catch Publishing is a rapidly expanding Portland-based Christian publisher seeking freelance writers to interview and write the stories of real people in our client churches and non-profit organizations. We're looking for motivated self-starters who love people, love writing their stories and, most importantly, LOVE the work of the local church.

Freelance writers work from home from around the nation. Responsibilities include:

- Interviewing storytellers from around the nation via telephone.
- Using those interviews to then write the inspirational, true-life stories of real people who have triumphed over adversity by the power and blood of Jesus Christ.

Applicants should be passionate and outgoing and possess a strong command of the written English language and some familiarity with AP Style. Applicants with degrees in journalism, creative writing, English and communications are preferred. At least one year of professional writing experience is required. (This can include a college newspaper or publication.)

All GCP writers work from home and must have broadband internet, telephone service (for interviews) and a digital tape recorder to record interviews.

GCP pays writers $200 per completed, approved story. After an approved initial for-hire trial story, writers may take as many stories at one time as they would like. (Some of our writers take up to five stories at one time.) All writers must be available to write three stories per month. We cannot guarantee three stories per month due to storyteller scheduling, but we are looking for professional writers who are available to write frequently when needed. Please note that stories average 3,500 to 7,000 words. We do not pay per word but rather per story. Our fees are non-negotiable. Writers are contract employees and work on a freelance basis. Some of our most successful writers started as passionate and talented hobbyists who used writing for GCP as a way to build their portfolios and improve their writing. Our writers have been published in multiple Chicken Soup for the Soul and other inspirational nationally-recognized books.

All qualified applicants should read our current Catch of the Month — this month's featured story taken from one of our current testimony books: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-GlwcL8A3PmanB5MDcwNUhqQ0E.

If you can write a story as good as or better than this one, send a cover letter, resume and non-fiction writing sample (or the first 700 words of one) to gcpjobs@gmail.com.

Writing samples should include:

  • A dramatic hook that immediately drops the reader into the climax of the story WITHOUT giving away the fact that JESUS CHRIST is the one who helps bring resolution

  • An interesting biography of the storyteller that brings the reader back to the climax introduced in the hook

  • Colorful, descriptive language that draws PICTURES for the reader

  • Multiple scenes and dialogues that SHOW rather than TELL

  • A strong “Jesus” moment that comes AFTER the reader has bonded with the storyteller

Applications accepted via email only through 6 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday, August 4, 2017. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR CONTACT OTHER GCP EMPLOYEES ABOUT THIS POSITION. Applications accepted at the above email address ONLY. (Those submitted to other email addresses will not be considered.)
