Salary$40,000 to $45,000

The Observer-Dispatch, a mid-size daily newspaper in Central New York, seeks a creative, organized professional who can guide our reporting staff to cover local sports like no one else – not just the scores and action, but the stories behind the athletes, coaches and schools.

Amid the challenge of balancing coverage among more than 30 school districts, seven colleges and an AHL team, comes major events and projects that are a sports lover’s dream. Inductions for the Baseball Hall of Fame and Boxing Hall of Fame, managing coverage for the Boilermaker Road Race and leading the charge to honor 350 local athletes at the All-Mohawk Valley awards banquet, are just a taste of what you can expect.

The ideal candidate will have previous management skills working in a sports department but reporters who have proven themselves and are looking to take the next step are welcome to apply. Aside from being well schooled in all sports avenues, we need a leader who is energetic, smart, curious and able to see the big picture -- someone who can manage a dedicated team and juggle multiple projects but still produce content if necessary.

The O-D is a progressive, collaborative news operation that focuses on delivering engaging local content to our readers on various platforms. The Sports Editor will work with other senior editors to coordinate the best sports package for print and online each day.

We are passionate about what we do here and are committed to both serving readers and helping our journalists develop new skills. Situated at the base of the foothills of the six million acre Adirondack Park, the Mohawk Valley is only a few hours drive from Syracuse, Albany, New York City and Boston. Utica is a lively city with a diverse population, many prominent colleges, great restaurants and lots of outdoor activities. An appreciation (or at least high tolerance) for snow and cold weather is a plus.
