Description:

We are seeking a nimble journalist who can cover a physically huge beat as a reporter and also be called in from the hinterlands to fill in as a page designer in the office. Based in Houghton, Michigan (get a map, go to the peninsula sticking out of the top of the Upper Peninsula — that's part of our coverage area) the Daily Mining Gazette's coverage area consists of the rural counties of Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga, a region of roughly 1,000 sqare miles.

This reporter covers Ontonagon and Baraga counties, the two on opposite sides of the coverage region. Since this reporter will likely spend most of his or her time in transit and on the ground in those two places, the reporter must have reliable transportation, because this reporter must be capable of owning all the news in each county 24/7. Much of Baraga County is indian reservation, so that presents a host of unique challenges given sovereignty issues.

This reporter will provide all the standard coverage of public safety news, education, economic development and municipal, county and township governments in addition to politcal and election coverage. This reporter can also expect to be assigned features and content pieces for special and advertorial products, as well as occasional coverage of Michigan Tech University in Houghton, which is so important to the entire region that it is covered by all the reporting staff.

On top of all that, this journalist will be called upon to fill in with page design duties when needed and will get experience in editing and newsroom management as well.

If you're looking for an opportunity to break into the newspaper business and feel ready for a challenge, send a resume and up to three of your best pieces of journalism to Craig Peterson, managing editor, at cpeterson@mininggazette.com.
