Hearken is looking for an engagement consultant to join our dynamic team as our customer base expands. The new engagement consultant will help the team scale its operations and provide individualized support to our partner newsrooms. Our consulting team currently includes Summer Fields, Julia Haslanger, and Ellen Mayer.
The engagement consultant position is 40 hours per week. The salary range for this position is between $50,000-$60,000, commensurate with experience. Hearken employees are offered health insurance benefits.

What is Hearken?

Hearken is a leader in the engagement journalism field. We developed a unique editorial model, called Public-Powered Journalism, that involves the audience from the pitch to publication. We work with nearly 100 newsrooms across the U.S. and the world to help them implement our model, through a combination of consulting and supporting technology.
Our company started in early 2015 and we’ve quickly grown from 2 people to 10. Our team is comprised of mission-driven technologists, journalists and a stellar sales and business team. Check out our website and our Medium posts for more about what we do / why we do it. 
Our office is located in downtown Chicago. We will consider candidates outside of Chicago who are self-motivated and have experience (and enjoy) working remotely, or who are interested in moving to Chicago.

Job Description 

Engagement consultants provide individualized support to partner newsrooms, beginning with the onboarding phase. Each consultant develops deep and ongoing relationships with journalists in their partner newsrooms, and supports them through many methods. This includes: 

  • leading training on the Hearken tech and storytelling model
  • teaching best practices
  • helping newsrooms develop engagement and outreach strategy
  • sharing relevant examples and lessons between partners
  • fielding support requests about both our tech and the public-powered journalism model

The consultants aim to provide proactive support, anticipating the resources a newsroom needs often before the newsroom even thinks to reach out for help. To do this, consultants keep a watchful eye on their partner newsrooms, tracking which features they use, reading and evaluating the stories they produce, and keeping tabs on the newsroom’s progress. 
Other duties that the consultants share include writing documentation for our help site, contributing to our monthly newsletter, doing case studies, staying on top of industry trends, and posting to our social media accounts.

In particular, engagement consultants are intimately involved in the process of designing and refining tech tools, providing feedback and serving as a stand-in for our users. Engagement consultants are plugged into a network of journalists and newsrooms that stretches around the country and the world, and will likely be invited to speak or participate in industry events on behalf of the company.

What we’re looking for in an engagement consultant

  • Experience working in a newsroom (whether as a reporter, producer, editor, product manager, engagement something-or-other, audience development manager, etc.)
  • Practical experience in any of the following: audience engagement, audience development, crowdsourcing, fostering online communities, and/or community organizing
  • Great customer service instincts and interpersonal skills
  • Passion and enthusiasm for Hearken’s public-powered model
  • Comfort with data and analytics
  • A brain full of ideas, strategies, and possibilities for transforming journalism


Expertise that will be valuable to our customers:

(We don’t expect anyone to have all of these)

  • Experience helping a newsroom (or other organization) grow its audience in communities that they had previously struggled to reach
  • Experience working with clients or partners around the world and across language barriers 
  • Experience working in video news, particularly commercial television
  • Experience planning events or doing in-real-life engagement 
  • Familiarity with the business side of journalism


Other “nice to have” skills:

  • Project management or product management experience
  • Familiarity with social media and newsletters
  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Experience measuring / demonstrating impact and writing case studies
  • Experience running webinars, conferences, and/or workshops
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Experience with user testing and user / audience surveys
  • Experience working in SaaS retention or customer success
