Description:

National Catholic Reporter

National Correspondent

Summary purpose of the job:

National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is the only significant alternative Catholic voice that provides avenues for expression of diverse perspectives. NCR is an independent news source with global interests, and although a large amount of its reporting deals with issues of the Catholic Church, an equal amount of its coverage is a marriage of the religious, political and social forces shaping public policies and institutions. We are concerned for all people and we are committed to shaping a world that recognizes the dignity of every human being, regardless of religious belief, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other characteristics. Throughout our history, we have been a voice for the disadvantaged and the marginalized, and we have told the stories of injustice that others simply will not print.

The National Correspondent, reporting to the Editor in Chief, will identify and report on news and issues involving the Catholic church in the United States, with a focus on putting a Catholic and faith perspective on national and political trends. The position calls for deft news reporting, compelling storytelling and a sound grasp of the work and challenges Catholics face in the church and in society. An authoritative voice is essential.

The correspondent will pay particular attention to issues of importance to NCR’s core audience, such as public policy that affects marginal communities, migration, militarism and peace-making, as well as act as a watch dog to the institutional church. NCR is a niche publication with a unique focus; fresh and unexpected stories told in a compelling way are drivers of our success.

The National Correspondent would be expected to:

  • Envision and execute high-quality stories reported from a home base and through pre-approved travel
  • Execute impactful journalism on a regular basis for the NCR website and social media platforms
  • Develop a strong, reliable network of sources, especially within institutions such as national and state bishops’ conferences, Catholic colleges and universities, Catholic think tanks and advocacy groups.
  • Recognize that journalism no longer means just the 800-word story and show creativity in presentation of every idea.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, accountability and integrity. NCR remains a fact-checking organization, and that fact-checking begins with the reporter.

The suitable candidate will be expected to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum of five years’ reporting and writing experience
  • The ability to write with authority, authenticity and accuracy.
  • A natural curiosity that fuels a desire to answer the fifth W: Why?
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Catholic church, history and culture that translates to a voice of authority in stories and columns
  • Excellent communication skills, including experience with interviewing sources
  • Team-oriented, flexible, positive, personable outlook and willingness to learn
  • Proven ability to self-motivate and work both independently and as part of a team
  • Passion for social justice, human dignity and the common good – all core values of the National Catholic Reporter
  • Appreciation for and strong understanding of the history and mission of the National Catholic Reporter
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly

National Catholic Reporter is based in Kansas City, Mo., but residing in Kansas City is not a requirement for this position. However, residence in or near a major urban center would be a plus.

NCR offers competitive salary and benefits, including:

  • Health, Dental, and Life Insurance; Long Term Disability, Group Annuity Program (403B), Employee Assistance Program
  • Flex Benefits
  • Generous Paid Vacation/Holiday/Sick/Personal Time
  • A professional, but casual and welcoming work environment
