Columbia University and the Pulitzer Prize Board are seeking a Pulitzer Prize Administrator, for full-time appointment, starting between July 1 and Sep. 1, 2017. The Pulitzer Prize Board annually awards twenty-one highly distinguished prizes in journalism, arts, and letters. In addition, the Pulitzer Prize Board provides study fellowships to young journalists and hosts seminars on Pulitzer-prize winning journalism in order to broaden and deepen public understanding of journalistic excellence. The Pulitzer Prize Administrator supports the Pulitzer Prize Board in its awarding of the Prizes and safeguards and enhances the integrity of the Prizes through oversight of all stages of the Prize process. Serving as the spokesperson for the Board, the Administrator reflects the mission of the Pulitzer Prizes and executes the overall strategic plan as directed by the Board.
Columbia University and the Pulitzer Prize Board seek an individual of wise judgment and tact, committed to excellence in journalism, arts, and letters, who is prepared to be a champion of the mission and vision of the Pulitzer Prize Board. The Administrator supervises the entry process, manages the jury system, organizes Board meetings and the annual award luncheon, and supports the work of standing and ad hoc Board committees. The Administrator answers inquiries about policies and practices from the press and the public; presides at award announcements, ceremonies, and press conferences; and makes other public appearances on behalf of the Prizes.
The Administrator reports to the Board Chair and President of Columbia University. The Administrator supports the Board’s ongoing effort to identify significant trends and issues that might prompt changes in the Plan of Award or other rules, guidelines, or procedures. The Administrator oversees ongoing efforts to keep the website (Pulitzer.org) dynamic and to capture Pulitzer history in a user-friendly archive.
The ideal candidate will be a vigorous advocate for the Pulitzer Prizes. Candidates must demonstrate keen understanding of journalistic excellence and be highly attuned to the shifting media landscape. Candidates will also have genuine interest in, meaningful exposure to and experience with contemporary arts and letters. In addition, the successful candidate will have proven success as a leader with administrative responsibility. Extraordinary communication and interpersonal skills are critical. Evidence of sound judgment and even temperament in a highly sensitive environment required.
