Description:

MIRS News — the most trusted, most-read source for Michigan Capitol coverage for the last two decades — is looking for a journalist who’s ready to dive headfirst into the fast-moving world of state politics. If you love the rush of a breaking story, can build relationships on both sides of the aisle, and get genuinely fired up about public policy shaping everyday life in Michigan… this opportunity might be fore you.

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver daily, non-partisan coverage of the 110-member Michigan House of Representatives.

  • File breaking news alerts, in-the-moment updates, and polished end-of-day stories.

  • Build and maintain sources with House members, staffers, and insiders on both sides of the aisle.

  • Team up with our editor, plus our Senate and Executive Branch and Judiciary correspondents, to keep the full Capitol picture sharp and accurate.

  • Develop connections within the lobbying and interest-group world to stay ahead in a competitive news landscape.

  • Edit and review stories from other members of the team.

  • Stay on top of every major issue shaping Lansing’s political ecosystem — House, Senate, Executive Branch, lobby corps, and beyond.

  • Contribute to the production of our daily online Capitol news service.

  • Use digital tools, research platforms, and social media like a pro.

What You Bring

  • Some experience in journalism is preferred — but show us your chops, and we’re listening.

  • Ability to thrive in a small, tight-knit newsroom while covering lawmakers with wildly different viewpoints.

  • Curiosity and understanding of how lawmakers, interest groups, lobbyists, and the public collide to create Michigan policy.

  • A willingness to take a writing test as part of the hiring process.

Who We Are

Since 1961, MIRSnews.com has been the go-to Capitol news source for lawmakers, lobbyists, staffers, and leaders across Michigan. For 20 years running, we’ve been ranked the most effective Capitol news operation in the state.

We offer a 401(k) with company match, health care benefits, and a commitment to equal opportunity in our newsroom.

Application deadline: December 10, 2025.

If you’re ready to report where Michigan’s power, politics, and policy intersect — we want to hear from you.
