~~Monterey County Weekly has an immediate opening for Editor.

Working with a team of seasoned staff writers and freelancers, the editor sets the direction for the news and arts pages -- in print and online, oversees the assignment of stories and their editing, conducts long-range planning, staffs the editorial department, leads editorial meetings, contracts freelancers, writes a regular column and occasional features, works with the art director on cover design and graphics. In addition to the responsibility for day-to-day oversight of the department, the editor is a member of the management team at the newspaper and is expected to be an ambassador of the newspaper to the community.

The ideal candidate will be equal parts news-nerd and culture vulture, will be experienced in both long-form narrative journalism and digital storytelling, and is a proven deadline hawk. The job requires exceptional language and organizational skills and an affection for teamwork, as well as a demonstrated history of leading writers to great results.

Monterey County Weekly is the big fish in a beautiful pond. As the largest circulation newspaper in one of the most spectacular counties in America, Monterey County Weekly has long been recognized for its thoughtful, provocative and engaging coverage of news, arts and entertainment. Founded in 1988, the newspaper has received scores of California and national newspaper awards over the past 30 years. Good journalism has proved to be good for business too. These days Monterey County Weekly prints 36,000 copies a week and dramatically out-circulates the Digital First and Gannett-owned daily papers in the market.

Monterey County Weekly values an old-fashioned work ethic, yet we inhabit a modern workplace. We pay competitive salaries and offer a generous benefit package. Please send letter of interest, resume and clip file to:
