Description:

Eugene Weekly is looking for two full-time writing positions to join our small, fierce and fun office. EW’s journalists provide readers with an alternative to the daily mainstream media that is both hard hitting and engaging, in print and digitally.

These are entry-level positions with room to grow.

  • News

We are looking for a reporter who can break news with a narrative touch, and do both solutions-based and investigative journalism. We don’t simply repeat other coverage; we provide a new story, a different perspective or a new angle.

EW’s news section covers key city, Lane County and Oregon issues from politics to crime to the environment. A love of public records and developing key sources is a must, as well as the flexibility to interview a vegan chef in the morning and head over to a protest in the afternoon.

  •  Arts

An ideal arts writer can write with flair, and cover anything from the punk band in the Whit to the ballet at the Hult to the Jell-o Art Show at Maude Kerns while digging up arts news as it is hitting the street.

We define arts broadly from graffiti to architecture and while you don’t need to know everything about the arts, we seek a writer who’s curious about everything and wants to share it with the community.

Eugene Weekly is looking for journalists who can write briskly and accurately as well as delve into long-form storytelling with color and excitement. A good EW reporter is someone who can work in a group and take edits well, but is independent and persistent.

A fond relationship with your phone’s camera and with social media will come in handy, and a good sense of humor is a bonus. There are opportunities for podcasting and other multimedia endeavors for those interested.

Our writers also do some editing, so you should have a good working relationship with AP style and not be married to the Oxford comma.

This entry-level position comes with some non-financial perks (mainly a lot of coffee, some concert tickets and office dogs). The position starts as soon as it’s filled and the applicant is available — we have some flexibility for the right person.

When not out reporting, Weekly reporters work out of our bright red office at 1251 Lincoln Street, with limited remote work possibilities when needed.

EW’s writers have gone on to Oregon Public Broadcasting, High Country News, The New York Times and more. EW is locally and family owned, and its ownership does not take profit from the paper.

The jobs are full-time positions with salaries commensurate with experience and benefits, including health insurance. We are looking for self-motivated writers who understand journalistic ethics and how to give back to the community, hold the powerful accountable and have a good time doing it.

Send résumé with two references, a cover letter and three writing clips to editor@eugeneweekly.com. Positions are open until filled. EW is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and those with diverse backgrounds and experience are encouraged to apply.

When applying, mention you saw this opening listed at JournalismJobs.com.
