Description:

The Monitor -- a 40,000 daily, 50,000 Sunday A.M. in the Texas Rio Grande Valley -- is looking for a web and social-media savvy, hard-charging, motivated reporter who is equally comfortable covering a beat or general assignments. Our ideal candidate is aggressive, loves to dig, works quickly and accurately and has the skills to write hard-news, in-depth or feature stories people want to read both in print and online. We are looking to fill this position as quickly as possible with a top quality candidate.

McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, one of the five fastest growing areas of the nation, is an exciting market where local news regularly makes the national wires. There is never a lack of news here and we deal day in and day out with some of the hottest issues facing the nation -- immigration, border security, border violence, drug smuggling, political corruption, foreign trade and quality of education.

If you have what it takes to do the job, we offer a competitive salary and benefits, including health and dental insurance and a 401K that has a company match. We also offer an outstanding working environment in our modern, 104,000-square-foot building with its state-of-the-art presses and equipment.

Although we prefer candidates with one or more years of experience, we welcome resumes and work samples from talented beginners with journalism degrees, particularly those with strong newspaper internships. Because we are in the Rio Grande Valley, fluency in Spanish is a plus, but not a requirement.

Online and social media reporting experience -- even as an internship -- is also a plus as we have fully transitioned into the world of fast-breaking, meaningful, online and social-media journalism.

We have new owners -- AIM Media Texas, which is headed by executives with extensive newspaper experience -- who are committed to journalism that meets the highest quality standards.

If you are interested in joining our team, please send a cover letter, resume and work samples to Steve Fagan, Editor, or Jared Taylor, Day Metro Editor, at: The Monitor, 1400 E. Nolana Loop McAllen, TX 78504 You may also email your materials to: newsroomjobs@themonitor.com . For further information you may contact Steve Fagan by phone at 956-683-4460; or Jared Taylor at 956-683-4439.

The Monitor is an Equal Opportunity employer. Non-U.S. citizen's wishing to apply for this position MUST already be in possession of a valid work visa and other appropriate documentation.
