Company: The Chronicle of Higher Education
Position:
Database Reporter
Location:
District of Columbia
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:
August 28, 2014
Job ID: 1596850

Description:

The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy are looking for an entry-level database reporter who is as passionate about finding stories in spreadsheets as s/he is in giving readers clear, in-depth insights into the meaning behind the numbers.

Our database reporters juggle many projects at once. One minute they could be working with fellow reporters and editors across the newsrooms on a major enterprise project, the next they’re chasing down a stray fact or figure from a hard-to-reach college or nonprofit spokesperson. They are as likely to be writing a blog post putting a recent report into context as they are to be working with developers and designers on our next award-winning data presentation.

If this sounds like the kind of environment you could thrive in — if you love using data to tell important investigative stories, have an interest in higher education and the non-profit world — and you want to work with others who feel the same way, then apply below.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of 3-5 years’ experience in database reporting.
  • Ability to write clear and accurate stories.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted reporting tools, especially MySQL and Excel.
  • Some programming ability (e.g., HTML CSS, Javascript, Python, jQuery) a big plus.
  • Outstanding attention to detail is a must.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, résumé, and links to work examples to editorialposition@chronicle.com.
