“News editor”

“Copy editor/Paginator/Reporter”

Are you ready? - Are you passionate about newspapers and journalism? Do you edit copy like a hawk and question the direction and inferences in stories? Are you someone who believes a page is a canvas and that marrying art and words paints a story that ultimately has an effect on a community? Are you able to turn around stories on a tight deadline? If so, then the Montrose Daily Press is interested in hearing from you. We have an immediate opening for news editor.

This position is considered the No. 2 spot in our newsroom. This is a developmental position. We’re looking for a talented individual who desires to become a newsroom leader someday. This is a challenging position, not for the faint of heart and demands many abilities:

•You must be proficient in writing compelling stories with little direction and show a willingness to find/write the “stuff” that’s important for our small town. This position would likely cover a regular beat or two.

•This position will occasionally paginate and showcase the art of bringing a page alive through visual and written mediums.

•Reading and checking copy is mandatory in this position, and is considered a necessity for developing long-term editing opportunities.

•You must be willing to embrace pairing social media with traditional journalism. That means regular tweets and Facebook updates.

•The person hired for this position will help manage a team of six to produce the best newspaper possible.

•Three years in the industry and management experience is a plus, but we would consider anyone with the drive and skills to make our newspaper better.

•Finally, you must be open to trying new and different things.

More about us – The Montrose Daily Press publishes six days a week. We have a number of new initiatives in place to see our franchise grow. The newsroom is an instrumental part of leading our paper and stewarding the community. We intend to create dynamic product that inform and foster community. Location, location, location - Montrose is ideally situated on the Western Slope of Colorado and rests at the foot of the Uncompahgre Plateau and San Juan Mountains. Our community is home to nearly 20,000 residents and is looked upon as the hub of southwestern Colorado. It’s a sunny environment here, and people say the water makes for good news — literally. Disclaimer – This position is challenging and shouldn’t be considered by those looking for a walk in the park. We fully expect a rock star, someone who pushes the boundaries of design and can write a captivating story in little to no time. We also like people who are excited to work and believe in the team mentality. This position isn’t for everyone. This position will pay according to experience. We are a small operation that leads to big opportunities. If you want to continue upstream and demonstrate your capabilities, then now is the time, and this is the place. Please apply ONLY electronically. Send a cover letter, a resume and references, salary history and expectations to: Justin Joiner, managing editor, Montrose Daily Press. You will get a confirmation of your application.
