The Las Vegas Sun is on the hunt for a politics editor who will oversee a team that covers the U.S. Senate majority leader along with state and local governments shackled with challenges.

This beat has proved so fertile, the outgoing politics editor was named Nevada’s Outstanding Journalist in 2013, while the current and previous Washington correspondents both received the Washington Press Club’s award for the most outstanding regional correspondent covering Capitol Hill.

As one of a dwindling number of organizations still operating a Washington, D.C., bureau, the Sun explores politics at every level. We pick our spots carefully and cover what matters most to Southern Nevadans, from city hall to the state Legislature to the offices of the Nevada congressional delegation.

We’re looking for candidates with a firm understanding of the Nevada political environment or the ability to grasp it quickly. This is a writing editor’s position, and as such we need someone who can lead by example by generating text stories and rich content for publication across our digital and print platforms.

We place a high value on innovation and creativity, both in the type of stories we pursue and the way we present them. We definitely are not wedded to the traditional approach of covering politics with an exclusive diet of stories told incrementally through narrative text. Our goal is to produce a mix of breaking news and enterprise stories that provide valuable context not only to wonks but casual political observers as well.

Our commitment to high quality has resulted in the Sun receiving honors at the highest levels, including a Pulitzer Prize in 2009, a Pulitzer finalist in 2011 and two EPPY Awards this year against such competition as CNN, Newsday and

If you’re interested in covering the entire spectrum of politics for a forward-thinking news organization, please email your resume and writing samples to with "Politics Editor" in the subject line.
