The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Staff Writer/Copy Editor for Animal Sheltering, its bimonthly, 60-page magazine serving the animal sheltering and animal rescue field. The writer/copyeditor’s primary role is to report, research, and write copy ranging from long-form, in-depth features to short, fun profiles and how-to pieces. Other duties include, but are not limited to: generating story ideas that support the magazine’s goals of helping shelters and rescues save more animals’ lives; copyediting materials for the magazine and ancillary organizational publications; working with sources to procure appropriate photography and art to accompany stories; fact checking; managing reader correspondence and social media interactions; and other duties that support the editor and the publications team. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in journalism, English, or related field along with three to four years experience producing fresh, accurate and informative copy. The ideal candidate will have a passion for confronting animal cruelty, celebrating progress and innovation and a nose for a good story that can inspire change and provoke discussion.
