Title:  Reporter for The Energy Daily

Summary:  In this role you will be responsible for researching and writing daily stories and enterprise/analytical pieces about U.S. and North American energy policy, regulatory and market developments. Your primary focus will be on the rapidly changing natural gas and oil sectors, their environmental impacts and the impact of growing unconventional gas/oil resources, such as shale gas and oil sands, on energy markets and policymaking. You will also cover selected clean energy topics, including offshore wind development.

You will work closely with the principal editor to identify key subject areas of interest to our subscribers and potential subscribers domestically and internationally, with the reporter responsible for following developments, helping set the editorial agenda and alerting the editor to new areas of interest.

This role will be internally focused to provide editorial output and boost the value of the publication, but also will include some external outreach in the form of editorial contacts with key industry players to help determine their information needs and gather market intelligence for The Energy Daily and the broader IHS Energy editorial team.

Responsibilities:

Research and write daily stories and analyses on energy policy, regulatory and market developments.

  • Become the subject matter expert on a broad range of natural gas/oil issues, such as offshore drilling, hydraulic fracturing and pipeline safety, among other topics to be determined by the editor.
  • Become the subject matter expert on offshore wind development and other clean energy topics as determined by the editor.
  • Develop sources within the energy industry, regulatory agencies and Congress to break news and provide subscribers with exclusive information.
  • Work with other IHS Energy editorial and consulting teams to boost integration and value enhancement across product lines.
  • Reach out to key industry players through editorial contacts to determine information needs of subscribers and potential subscribers and ways to enhance value of The Energy Daily.
  • Assist in daily production of The Energy Daily as determined by the editor.
  • Work with marketing/sales to identify potential subscribers or up-sell opportunities. 

Required Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism.

Required Experience: The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, have some background and/or interest in energy issues, and have a proven track record of writing to meet a daily deadline (at least two years daily deadline experience preferred).

Other skills:

  • Strong writing skills, news judgment and analytical ability and dedication to factual accuracy.
  • Some background and/or interest in government policy, regulatory and political affairs.
  • Ability to work effectively in an editorial team environment and across broader IHS enterprise.
  • Ability to adapt to change, both in terms of evolving reporting assignments and broader IHS enterprise.  

Travel: Some travel required.
